November Outdoor Paving Maintenance Tips

November outdoor paving maintenance tips
1. Clear leaves and debris regularly
Wet leaves trap moisture and promote algae, moss, and staining. Use a stiff broom or a leaf blower weekly to keep the surface clear. Avoid using metal shovels that could scratch or damage the paving.
Any algae or leaf stains can be removed with a sodium hypochlorite cleaner such as our ProClean Moss and Algae Cleaner.
Full PPE must always be worn, including gloves, goggles and a respirator mask to ensure safe handling of cleaning solutions.
2. Clean and treat for moss or algae
Damp, shaded areas are especially prone to slippery moss and algae growth. Apply a biocide or specialist moss and algae remover on a dry day for best results. Alternatively, use a mild bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) and rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Avoid pressure washing too aggressively as it can erode jointing material or damage the paving surface. We recommend using products such as our Algae Remover or ProClean Moss and Algae Cleaner.
Again, ensure you are wearing full PPE including gloves, goggles and a respirator mask for safe application.
3. Check joints and refill if needed
Loose or missing jointing mortar or compound should be replaced to prevent water ingress and long-term surface damage. Regularly inspect your paving and refill joints as necessary.
We recommend using Azpects EASYJoint for reliable all-year application. Alternatively, explore our other options such as EASYJoint Select or EASYJoint PRO for different paving types and finishes.
4. Seal surfaces if conditions allow
Applying a quality sealer protects your paving from frost, stains, and water penetration. Only apply when the temperature is above 5–10°C and the surface is completely dry, with no rain forecast for at least 24 hours.
We recommend water-based sealants during the autumn and winter months for better breathability and ease of use in cooler conditions.
Always wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a respirator mask when sealing.
5. Inspect for damage
Early intervention can save costly repairs later. Walk around your paved areas and check for cracks, loose slabs, or uneven sections. Re-lay or re-level any unstable blocks before winter sets in to prevent further deterioration caused by frost and moisture.
6. Choose the right timing
Pick mild, dry days for cleaning or sealing work. Avoid starting projects when frost or rain is forecast within the next 24 hours to ensure products cure properly and the surface remains protected.
Conclusion
Taking time to maintain your paving before winter helps prevent costly damage and keeps your outdoor spaces safe and attractive. Regular cleaning, re-sanding, and sealing with trusted products like our Pro Sealants range will protect your surfaces against moisture, frost, and algae all season long. With the right preparation, your paving will stay clean, strong, and ready to face the colder months ahead.
