Patio Cleaning FAQs
Do I Need to Clean Before Sealing?
Yes — cleaning is a critical step before applying a patio sealant. If you seal over dirt or moss, it can:
- Trap moisture and cause discolouration
- Prevent proper bonding of the sealant
- Leave visible stains or patches under the surface
A properly cleaned patio ensures the sealant works effectively and looks professional.
What’s the best way to clean a patio before sealing?
For best results, use a quality patio cleaner followed by a pressure washer to lift dirt, algae, and black spot effectively. Brands like Azpects recommend pressure washing over scrubbing with a stiff brush, as it delivers a deeper, more thorough clean — essential for proper sealant adhesion. Be sure to let the patio dry fully before applying any sealant.
Can I use bleach to clean my patio?
Many professional patio cleaners, including ProClean, are made with a specially formulated sodium hypochlorite solution — commonly known as ‘hypo’ or outdoor-grade bleach. It’s far stronger than household bleach and highly effective for removing algae, black spot and stubborn organic growth from most patio surfaces. That said, hypo isn’t always necessary — if there’s no heavy algae or black spot present, a gentler clean using our Snow Foam Pre-Wash or Deep Clean from Azpects may be more suitable. Always carry out a small test patch first to ensure compatibility with your surface.
How long after cleaning can I apply a patio sealant?
Wait until the patio is completely dry, which usually means at least 24–72 hours depending on weather. Damp patios can cause sealants to go cloudy or peel.
What causes black spots on patios?
Black spots are typically caused by lichen — a tough, embedded growth that forms on porous paving. The most effective treatments are a dedicated black spot remover or a sodium hypochlorite-based cleaner (like ProClean). Always test the product on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it's safe for your surface type.
How often should I clean my patio?
Once or twice a year is usually enough. Spring is a great time to clean and seal ready for summer use.
